This Mother’s Day weekend Tryon Palace invites visitors to step back in time and embark on a tea tour that will focus on tea culture in 18th century Great Britain and Colonial America. The tours will be held Saturday, May 9, at Tryon Palace in historic downtown New Bern, N.C.
Tea tours will first explore the circa 1780 John Wright Stanly House as part of a customized, half-hour tour, and include a stroll through the house’s decorative gardens. While touring through the house and gardens, visitors will learn about tea culture in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Afterward, the tour will cross George Street and enter the Commission House, where costumed interpreters will serve tea and cakes on silver service and fine china.
When guests are finished with tea they may take a guided tour of the Tryon Palace Gardens, which is included with the price of admission for the tea. The garden tour will conclude at the Tryon Palace Garden Shop and each guest will receive a 10-percent off coupon for the shop.
Tickets are $20 ($14 for members of the Tryon Palace Foundation) each and preregistration is required by 5 p.m. on May 7. Payment is due at the time of registration and space is limited to 30 participants in each of the available tour times, which begin at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. Each tour will begin at the Waystation, located on the corner of Pollock and George streets.
