Secretary Susan Kluttz of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources issued the following statement after learning of the death of Archaeologist Dr. Stanley South, a North Carolina native and internationally-recognized archaeologist. He died yesterday in Columbia, S.C., at the age of 88.
Dr. South was the first archaeologist hired by this department, then known as the Department of Archives and History, in 1956. He was instrumental in 'rediscovering' and promoting many of N.C.'s prehistoric and historic period sites, including several that form the core of the State Historic Sites program. These sites include Town Creek Indian Mound, Brunswick Town, Historic Halifax and Ft. Dobbs. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
Dr. South's body of work spanned over sixty years starting with his student days at UNC-Chapel Hill. Many of his methods and theories are still widely employed by archaeologists today.
