Duke Homestead State Historic Site in Durham will be closed for approximately three weeks beginning Monday, Oct. 31 while repairs are made to the Visitor Center roof.

Arrangements are being made to redirect school groups scheduled to visit during that period to Bennett Place State Historic Site, also in Durham. A similar educational experience will be provided there.

Christmas events scheduled for December will go on as planned.

Duke Homestead is the site of the Duke family’s 19th century farm, where Washington Duke started a tobacco business that later became the largest in the world. With the money generated by this venture, the Dukes endowed Duke University, began what later grew into Duke Energy, and founded an endowment that continues to contribute to charitable causes today.
