July Programs at the N.C. Museum of History

Take advantage of July programs for all ages at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. Plan an evening out on Friday, July 3, to see the blockbuster exhibit Starring North Carolina! about the state’s film industry. In fact, the exhibit, which runs through Monday, Sept. 7, will have half-off admission until it closes! The Starring North Carolina! Film Series continues on July 10 with a screening of “The Conjuring,” which was shot in Wilmington.

Get back to nature during the drop-in program Soaps, Salves and Sassafras on July 11. Learn about plants that are used for medicine, sample sassafras tea, and more. July also brings four age-appropriate programs for children.

Mark your calendar for all this and more at the N.C. Museum of History. Admission is free unless otherwise noted. Parking is free on weekends.

History Corner: Lighthouse Life
Wednesday, July 1, 10-11 a.m.

History Hunters: Lighthouses and Surfmen
Wednesday, July 1, 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Storytime in the Gallery
Thursdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 10-10:30 a.m.
Meet a staff member at the information desk and follow your guide to one of the museum galleries. There, you can look around and listen to a history-related story. Topics change every week. Ages 3 and up (with adult). 
 
First Fridays at the Museum 
Friday, July 3, 5-9 p.m. 
Visit The Story of North Carolina chronological history exhibition on the lobby level and the Starring North Carolina! film exhibit (last tickets sold at 8 p.m.) on the third floor. Before you leave, stop by the Museum Shop to look for a souvenir. The North Carolina Craft Brewers Guild will be organizing tastings of beer from a local brewery during each evening. 
 
Independence Day 
Saturday, July 4, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Enjoy some festivities downtown, then cool off with a visit to our galleries, including Starring North Carolina!, which is open with half-price admission. 
 
Time for Tots: Stars and Stripes
Tuesday, July 7 or 14, 10-10:45 a.m.

History à la Carte: Southern Impressions 
Wednesday, July 8, noon-1 p.m. 
An exhibit opening in December, Southern Impressions: Paintings From the James-Farmer Collection, will explore stories of southern people, culture and landscape through loaned paintings and museum artifacts. Michael A. Ausbon, Associate Curator of Decorative Arts, will discuss details of this upcoming exhibit, which features a collection on loan from Dr. Nancy Farmer and Dr. Everette James, of Chapel Hill. Bring your lunch; beverages provided. 
 
Starring North Carolina! Film Series: “The Conjuring” 
Friday, July 10, 6 p.m.
“The Conjuring” (2013) was shot at EUE/Screen Gems Studios and UNC-Wilmington. The exhibit Starring North Carolina! features costumes and some prop equipment used during filming. $5 plus tax per person; $4 plus tax for museum members. NOTE: MPAA rating: R-V (violence); run time: 112 min. 
 
Soaps, Salves and Sassafras
Saturday, July 11, 1-4 p.m. (drop-in program)
Learn how plants have been and are currently used for medicine and hygiene. Sample sassafras tea, and take home recipes and tips to keep you and your house fresh all summer long.
