Historian Hari Jones, assistant director and curator of the African American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation and Museum, will present "The Black Holocaust in America," a lecture on the 1921 bombing of the African American community in Tulsa, Okla., known as the "Black Wall Street." This free lecture will be held at the North Carolina History Center Thursday, May 19, at 7 p.m.
As part of the Tryon Palace African American Lecture Series, Jones will reveal how extensive and well-organized this affluent African American community was, and present the horrors and aftermath of this often forgotten event in history. A Native of Pauls Valley, Okla., Jones served in the United States Marine Corps for over 20 years, retiring as a captain in 1997.
The Tryon Palace African American Lecture Series offers a free, new program on the third Thursday of each month. All performances begin at 7 p.m. in Cullman Performance Hall and are free, thanks to a generous donation from the Harold H. Bate Foundation. Special hearing devices are available if requests are made 48 hours in advance of the performance.
