RALEIGH - The Fall and holiday seasons bring a multitude of exciting events and family fun at Natural and Cultural Resources' sites throughout North Carolina.
Enjoy the Fall colors at a state park, see elegant Art Deco cars at the N.C. Museum of Art, trick or treat under the sea at a North Carolina aquarium, or explore your family history at the State Archives.
Shake a tail feather at the N.C. Zoo's annual Halloween event, join the American Indian Heritage celebration at the N.C. Museum of History, or visit one of our historic sites to learn how Christmas was celebrated in Colonial or Victorian times.

Sept. 3 through March 5, 2017. N.C. Museum of History, Raleigh. Selma to Montgomery: A March for the Right to Vote: Photographs by Spider Martin. Exhibit focuses on the March to Selma and the campaign for African American voting rights and social justice that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Free.
Oct. 1-Jan. 15, 2017. N.C. Museum of Art, Raleigh. Rolling Sculpture: Art Deco Cars from the 1930s and '40s. The elegance and detail or the art deco movement captured is steel through car design at its peak in a 14-car, three motorcycle exhibit. Prices vary.
Oct. 15. State Archives, Raleigh. Family History Fair. The workshop offers presentations, exhibits, vendors and genealogical consultations. For the first time the event is streamed from the Museum of Natural Sciences to be experienced virtually. Free.
Oct. 15. State Archives, Raleigh. Home Movie Day. The annual global event encourages guests to bring home movies to share and learn ways to preserve and care for your home movies. Free.
Oct. 15. N.C. Zoo, Asheboro. N.C. Zoo Grooves. Shake your tail feathers at the N.C. Zoo's 21 and older, Halloween party. A wicked fun night of live music, costumes, food and craft beer.
Oct. 15. Gorges State Park, Sapphire. Gorges Gorgeous Colors. Enjoy a relaxing hayride around the park and the changing fall colors. Inside there's a relaxing fireplace; music inside and out with local vendors, food, and wildlife education programs throughout the day. Free.
Oct. 20-23. Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands, Asheville. Over 200 craftspeople fill two floors with fine handcrafted items, while local musicians play live on the arena stage and craft educators share their knowledge with children in hands-on projects.
Oct. 22 thru March 12, 2017. N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, Raleigh. Secret World Inside You.Exhibit considers the 100,000,000 tiny creatures living on your skin and in your gut, in the microbiome that keeps you healthy.
Oct. 26-29, N.C. Aquariums. Trick or Treat Under the Sea. This annual event brings a splash of Halloween fun to our aquariums. See each aquarium's website for specific dates and details.
Oct. 30. Crowder's Mountain State Park, King's Mountain. "Earth's Last Stand" MarchRecreation. Recalls the Oct. 30, 1971, march by students in the Gaston College Ecology Club to protest strip mining at Crowder's Mountain State Park. A commemoration/Centennial event
Nov. 1-Feb. 19, 2017. Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem.Dispatches. Contemporary artists, Pulitzer-prize winning photojournalists and new media artists tell news stories through art and respond to current social events. Free.
Nov. 18-Dec. 22, N.C. Transportation Museum, Spencer. The Polar Express Train Ride.Inspired by the run-away hit movie, this holiday favorite comes to life as you and your family take a ride on "The Polar Express."
Nov. 19. N.C. Museum of History, Raleigh. American Indian Heritage Celebration. Annual program with musicians, dancers, storytellers, authors, craft demonstrations, games, food and more. Free.
Nov. 19. QAR Conservation Lab, Greenville. Saturday at the QAR Lab. Tours to see artifacts recovered from Blackbeard's flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge. See cannons, anchors, platters and more on the 1.5-hour tour. First Tuesday tours or specially booked tours also available. Free.
Nov. 22-Jan. 8, 2017. Museum of the Cape Fear, Fayetteville. A Victorian Christmas. Victorian decorations in the1896 Poe House. A big tree, greenery and red berries will boost your Christmas spirit as you see traditions that are still held dear. Tours daily. Free.
Throughout December. Traditional Christmas celebrations on various dates at 27 state historic sites across North Carolina. Most free.
Dec. 10, Thomas Wolfe Memorial, Asheville. Holiday Open House. Celebrate the holidays with tours, crafts and activities at this popular state historic site. Children free.
Dec. 10, Historic Bath. Christmas Open House. Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the holiday as you walk the streets of Bath and visit the historic buildings on site.
Dec. 10-17. Tryon Palace, New Bern. Candlelight: A Colonial Christmas Celebration. The famed holiday celebration features new decorations and heartwarming vignettes from several periods illuminated by candlelight. Prices vary.
Jan. 1, 2017. All N.C. State Parks. First Day Hike. Join in the holiday tradition for a fit start to the New Year with a hike at a state park near you
