Costumed interpreters will present practices of the 1860s during the "Christmas Customs of the Civil War" program at the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center Dec. 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., following the Kinston Christmas Parade.
Historic interpreters will represent soldiers and civilians and will show what life was like in the battle zone and on the homefront. Visitors will enjoy demonstrations and take part in parlor games and crafts of the period. Guests could make a yarn doll to take home! While some soldiers and sailors were lucky enough to get leave around the holidays, others tried to celebrate wherever they were.

Learn about the new technology to combat superior manpower that the CSS Neuse ironclad represented. State of the art exhibits at the CSS Neuse Center showcase the only Civil War ironclad above water. The Confederate Navy launched the ill-fated Neuse attempting to gain control of the lower Neuse and New Bern. Ultimately the Confederates blew up the vessel to keep it from Union hands.
