The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) announced today that Joanna Zazzali has been named the next director of the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher. An aquarium employee for more than 16 years, Zazzali will assume her new role Aug. 1. Zazzali replaces Hap Fatzinger, who left the aquarium in January to become director of the North Carolina Aquariums Division.
“The Aquariums are excited that Joanna Zazzali will be serving as the new director for the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher,” said Fatzinger. “Over the past 17 years, her dedication, commitment, and passion for the NC Aquariums and our mission has been unwavering. She has helped us navigate many challenges over the years while still focusing on improving opportunities for staff and enhancing visitor experience.”
Zazzali holds a bachelor’s degree from Frostburg State University. Since April 2012, she has been the visitor and member services coordinator for the aquarium. In that role she oversaw the safety/security and guest services team while also serving on the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Safety Committee. She began her career at the aquarium in 2008 as an admissions cashier before serving as the aquarium’s registrar from 2010-2012. Zazzali has been acting director of the aquarium since Fatzinger’s departure in January.
“I am honored to assume the role of aquarium director and continue to be a part of such an amazing and inspirational team,” Zazzali said. “I look forward to supporting the staff, volunteers, and our community as we continue to pursue our important work in conservation, sustainability, and animal care.”
