Meet the rising generation of North Carolina’s traditional artists in a collection of documentary portraits in the exhibition "New Faces of Tradition: Documenting North Carolina’s Young Artists," May 28 to June 30 at the Rubenstein Arts Center at Duke University.
The exhibition is presented by the North Carolina Arts Council in collaboration with the Rubenstein Arts Center at Duke University.
From 2015 to 2019, the Arts Council’s Folklife Program surveyed traditional artists whose work comes from deep cultural roots and community connections and brought them together for gatherings across the state for workshops and conversations.
Discovering a common need for portrait photography and self-representation, the Folklife Program collaborated with Duke University to match traditional artists with volunteer professional and student photographers from Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, and the Triangle community.
This special exhibition debuts these collaborative portraits.
An opening reception is scheduled Thurs., May 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rubenstein Arts Center’s Gallery 235. The reception is open to the public and will feature live performances by jazz saxophonist Shaquim Muldrow and old-time musician Sonya Badigian.
