Did you know the state tree is the pine? Or that the state sport is stock car racing? Come out to learn these facts and more -- meet your North Carolina state symbols at the symbol for our state, the N.C. State Capitol! Join the Capitol for a day of free family fun Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Various organizations representing state symbols will assemble on the Capitol’s east grounds, giving visitors the chance to learn about our state symbols and how they affect our environment and culture through a variety of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) related activities.
Did you know our state bird is the cardinal? Or that the state drink is milk? How about the state insect – did you know it’s the western honey bee? The event will feature representatives of these symbols and more, and in some cases, we’ll have the actual symbols themselves. Want to meet our state reptile? Join the N.C. Herpetological Society and say hello to an eastern box turtle! What about the state butterfly? The eastern tiger swallowtail will be here too!
The Capitol building will also be open for guided and self-guided tours. Come on out to meet your state symbols! This is a rain or shine event.
