Many fans of the “Outlander” book series know that the Battle of Alamance figures prominently in book five, “The Fiery Cross.” Alamance Battleground State Historic Site will celebrate that time period and sensibility with the “Fraser’s Ridge Scottish Music Jam,” April 28, 1 to 4 p.m. Bring a lawn chair and picnic to the free event and enjoy an afternoon of Scottish music.
The Allen House at Alamance Battleground is a good representation of how the Outlander characters would have lived when they settled in the North Carolina mountains at “Frasier’s Ridge.” Featuring 18th century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th century time traveling wife, Claire, author Diana Gabaldon captures the tension of the pre-Revolutionary War days of 1771, even as the Battle of Alamance preceded the Revolutionary War.
The lilt of the dulcimers, played by Hawfields Jammers from the Triad region, will showcase Scottish music and North Carolina folk music. Youth Musicians of Alamance will share Scottish music also, and soloist E. Marie Denig will sing Scottish folk songs a Capella.
The special event will end with a party for Jaime Fraser, a main character in the book, who was born May 1, 1721. The singing of “Happy Birthday,” refreshments and cardboard character cutouts for photo ops will make a joyous end to Outlander flavored celebration.
