The North Carolina Historical Commission has named five of its members to serve on a committee that will study the issue of relocating three Confederate monuments located on State Capitol grounds. The committee will conduct its first meeting via conference call Monday, Jan. 22 at 3 p.m.

At their Sept. 22, 2017 meeting, the N.C. Historical Commission voted to postpone until their April 2018 meeting any decision regarding a petition from the N.C. Department of Administration to relocate three Confederate monuments from the State Capitol grounds in Raleigh to the Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site in Four Oaks, N.C. The commission voted to appoint a committee from commission members to study the issue and seek advice and legal opinions from appropriate entities.
At the Jan. 22 meeting, the committee intends to discuss their responsibilities, the solicitation of public comments and legal advice, and the scheduling of future meetings. The meeting will not include a public comment period.
A complete agenda will be included with the official public notice of the meeting and will be posted online at www.ncdcr.gov within two days of the meeting.
