The State Capitol invites visitors to share in the season of giving. In addition to enjoying the luminaries, holiday music, and Gov. Roy Cooper’s tree lighting, visitors are asked to contribute to the “School Pantries” program of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle at the Dec. 6 event, 5 to 7:30 p.m. The drive is being held in support of First Lady Kristin Cooper’s efforts to bring attention to food insecurity across our state.
Visitors can drop donations in a bin inside the State Capitol, and then enjoy cookies and hot chocolate given by the Junior Women’s Club outside. Non-perishable food items including canned fruits and vegetables, dried noodles and sauces, whole grain cereal, peanut butter, crackers and soups are requested. Learn more at https://www.foodshuttle.org/donate-food.
The Backpack Buddies program provides food to low income children on weekends when school meals are not available to 72 schools in the region. Visitors to the State Capitol can see Santa and be Santa’s helpers with a food donation. The Capitol will accept donations through Dec. 16.
In cooperation with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, the N.C. Museum of History is having a food drive through Dec. 12. Visitors may place non-perishable food items in one of two bins in the museum. Learn more here.
