On January 22, the Arts Council opens,Romare Bearden: Beat of a Different Drum,” to commemorate Black History Month. The exhibit contains the original illustrations by Romare Bearden from his children’s book, Li’l Dan the Drummer Boy: A Civil War Story. The Museum of the Cape Fear has provided several Civil War-related artifacts to complement this special exhibition.

“The museum is so delighted to be included and grateful for the opportunity to share in this exhibition,” chimed Leisa Greathouse, curator of education at the Museum of the Cape Fear. “Community collaborations are no longer just buzzwords, they are an important part of how cultural institutions are doing business for the greater good. This exhibit in particular is a marriage of art and artifacts,” Greathouse summarized.

The museum loaned eleven artifacts, including a Civil War drum that has now been removed from its second floor display case, as well as artifacts that have never been on display. It is a chance for the public to view these objects; and, for the museum, a chance for these artifacts to be set in a different context, adding to the historical knowledge and value they hold for students of history and craftsmanship.

Take an opportunity to get a rare glance at some of our state’s historical treasures. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
