What would it be like if famed Civil War diarist Mary Chesnut had access to social media in her day? We teamed up with our friends at Visit North Carolina to find out.

Together we created The Mary Chesnut Project, a digital diary of Mary Chesnut, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. Through Tumblr and Twitter feeds, the project tells the story of final campaigns of the Civil War in North Carolina in a new way and invites readers to get out there and explore this fascinating era of Tar Heel history.

Though the project was active between November 2014 and April 2015, the archvied posts are a great way to delve into North Carolina's Civil War story.

Posts from the project are based on A Diary from Dixie, the published diary of Mary Boykin Chesnut. The wife of Brigadier-General James Chesnut of the Confederate army, Chesnut details daily life in the South and key events in the war from her own unique perspective and using her signature wit.

Themes and images from her work are used with permission from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries. Other period images have been provided by the Library of Congress, North Carolina Museum of History, State Archives of North Carolina and U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command.
