Outdoor music festivals are one of our favorite ways to soak in the joy of North Carolina’s seasonal beauty while vibing to some awesome music. As we get ready for MerleFest, we decided to share a few festival tips. First, review the official MerleFest Festival Information page for rules, regs, and the lay of the land. Then read through our quick guide to get the most out of this signature North Carolina event:
Do your research
So much music. So little time. You will probably recognize the headliners, but there will be many artists that are new to you. Listen to some of their music ahead of time.
Pro Tip: Use the MerleFest app to select the artists you like. The app will map out a daily schedule for you. That being said, you should also be flexible and open to the magic of this event. If you hear something you like as you pass one of the many stages, stop and check it out.
Pack the essentials
You’ll be camping, so bring your camping stuff. Obviously. But consider including the following as you gather your gear:
Sunscreen! You’ll be in direct sunshine at some stages.
Bug spray. You’ll be outside in North Carolina. So, you will look like a mosquito buffet.
Camp chair. One that is easy to collapse and carry around. You’ll be doing a lot of that.
Ear plugs. Jamming goes late into the night. You’ll want to get a little sleep at some point. Or maybe not. Either way, you’ll be prepared to make that call on the spot.
Comfortable shoes. You will walk a lot over uneven terrain. A note about accessibility: According to festival organizers, all stages are accessible by wheelchair, however, the grounds contain steep hills, stairs, gravel, pine straw, and grass. This challenging terrain may be difficult to navigate.
Rain gear. April showers, y’all. The festival will go on, rain or shine.
Clothing for all seasons. Tank top? Sweater? Yes. In spring, temperatures can swing wildly in this area of North Carolina. Bring clothes suitable for hot and cold weather.
There will be food
Feel free to bring your own food and drinks (no alcohol), but there is also a food tent. A big one. It’s like a mini state fair of delicious options.
Don’t skip the dance tent
As you wrap up the day, you may be tired. If you have any juice left, drop in at the dance tent. The bands who play the dance tent after the last Watson Stage show are there to party. It’s wild!
So, you know, go with the flow. Have fun.
If you are going to MerleFest, we’ll see you there! Special thanks to Anita Normanly, multi-year MerleFest attendee, for sharing her experience and festival tips for this article.
