The Statewide Arts Celebration is finally here! This fall, arts organizations in all 100 counties are dedicating programming to the North Carolina Arts Council’s 50th Anniversary. An Evening of Music Featuring Bill Myers and Dick Knight and Sherri Winston

Join the Kinston Community Council for the Arts for an evening of music with multi-instrumentalists Bill Myers and Dick Knight, who are both featured in the North Carolina Arts Council’s African American Music Trails. Myers, a North Carolina Heritage Award winner, and Knight, who played first trumpet with James Brown, will be joined by vocalist Sherri Winston. This concert is free and open to the public.
Jazz at the Bechtler: Kind of Blue

This month, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art dedicates its popular First Friday jazz performances to the North Carolina Arts Council’s 50th Anniversary. The Ziad Jazz Quartet will perform songs from Miles Davis’ seminal album Kind of Blue. Tickets are $14 for the public and $8 for museum members.
29th Annual Meherrin Pow Wow

The Meherrin Nation kicks of its 29th Annual Pow Wow on Friday, October 6th. The Pow Wow is open to the public, and will feature drumming, arts, crafts, food, contest and social dancing, and representatives from several Native American Nations. The tribe will host a special dedication to the North Carolina Arts Council’s 50th Anniversary on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
Duck Jazz Festival

The Duck Jazz Festival opens with live music on the Green from the Mint Julep Jazz Band from Durham, North Carolina. Five local artists will set-up to paint and create during the concert. In between sets visitors may participate in a free East Coast Swing. This special celebration of music, art and dance will include a 50th Anniversary toast to the North Carolina Arts Council.
Celebrating Thomas Wolfe’s Birthday

October is Thomas Wolfe month in Asheville, and the Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site is dedicating its celebration of Thomas Wolfe’s 107th birthday to the North Carolina Arts Council’s 50th Anniversary. The site will offer free historic house tours for NC residents, a used book sale, children’s crafts, cake and Thomas Wolfe apple crisp ice cream from The Hop Ice Cream Café.
