Basic kayak instruction and safety lessons on shore are followed by a 1.5-mile paddle through the salt marsh in our sit-in cockpit touring kayaks; or bring your own kayak and join us at a discount. The program is recommended for ages 12 and up. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Come out to the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport on May 28 to learn about and try your hand at a variety of 18th century games and toys. The program is part of the museum’s Anchors Aweigh series, which features hands-on activities that focus on a specific part of Lower Cape Fear and North Carolina history. Anchors Aweigh is geared toward families and all ages. These free programs are drop-in style and run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

While Memorial Day may be seen as the kickoff of the summer season, its meaning runs far deeper. Join the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport May 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to dive into the history surrounding this uniquely American holiday. The program is part of the museum’s Deep Dive into History series. The free drop-in program is designed to give visitors a deeper understanding of our shared past through costumed interpretation. Programs run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and visitors can interact one-on-one with the presenter at any time during the program.

Mountain Gateway Museum, in partnership with the McDowell County Public Library, soon will launch a new monthly book club exploring regional history through literature.
The Museum of the Albemarle will host The Ongoing Fight for Freedom: Stories of NC Black Veterans on Thursday, May 1 at 6 p.m. in the Gaither Auditorium.
The initiative is part of the upcoming America 250 semiquincentennial observance in 2026. In North Carolina, the event is led by the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources’ America 250 NC initiative.“Two Lights for Tomorrow” will take place on the night of April 18, recognizing the 250th anniversary of the ride of Paul Revere. To commemorate this event, two lights will shine from the fourth floor of Museum of the Albemarle in our community throughout the night of April 18.
The finale in a special series of concerts celebrating North Carolina’s unique story of moonshine and motorsports will take place March 29 at the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, N.C.The concert will feature Tar Heel legend of Americana, Jim Lauderdale, the iconic bluegrass combo, the Kruger Brothers with special guest Jonah Horton, along with the Nest of Singing Birds.
