All of our library-related programming is administered through the State Library of North Carolina.
The principal library of state government since 1812, the State Library builds the capacity of all libraries in North Carolina, and develops and supports access to traditional and online collections such as genealogy, North Carolina culture and heritage and resources for the blind and physically handicapped.
Building on the Capacity of All North Carolina Libraries
The Library Development section of the State Library works like the agricultural extension service for our state's public libraries, helping build and maintain services to libraries across the state and fostering best practices in the library community. It also administers the program of state aid to local libraries.
Each consultant serves as a liaison to all types of libraries in specific counties, providing assistance with federal and other grant programs and offering expertise in different areas from youth services to management and technology. Through continuing education events, publications, surveys, and other activities, the State Library reaches citizens and visitors in all 100 counties.
Popular programs include the Job Search Toolkit that helps librarians train to help patrons with job searches; the N.C. Center for the Book, which focuses public interest on books, reading, libraries and the literary heritage of the state; and Youth Services, which helps North Carolina’s youngsters better appreciate the world that is available at their library.
